---SPOILERS AHEAD---

~The Cake wasn't a lie afterall~

The end, at last. It was so amazing and surprising it even gave me chills. Oh and I cried. That was.. beautiful. Just beautiful. No, BEYOND beautiful. So much character, so much SOUL!! I just love it. I love them both. So much. I KNEW we could all get along somehow. *Sob* ...C-can I have my cake now? I kind of feel like I deserve it. After all this time. All of us. Let's share.

GlaDOS is the most awesome enemy ever!! And the ending, just oh my god. Touched me beyond words. So I have loads of respect for her. I... honestly, part of me didn't want to leave her. It was mentally painful, especially upon learning the opera lyrics, to be overwhelmed by so much love. A bizarre, strange kind of love. I love them all, seriously. And that's supposed to be me, by the way. Me and illustrations of my adventures within the Aperture Science Facility.

I know there's tons of flaws and stuff here but please bear with me. Hand-drawn, transferred to my laptop and coloured/shaded in Photoshop using the touchpad. I got lazy and ignored some of the details on purpose.

Since Valve never released the ACTUAL lyrics, we can't be a 100% sure, so there are several versions that different fans have taken time to translate. I recommend you to find and compare them if you want it as accurate as possible, but here's is one:

Cara bel, cara mia bella (Dear beauty, my beautiful darling)
Mia bambina*, a tra ché la stima, ché la stima (My child, that I admire, that I admire)
A cara mia, addio! (To my dear, farewell!)
Mia bambina, cara, perchi non passi lontana, si lontana da scienza? (My child, dear, why don't you walk far away, yes far away from Science?)
Cara, cara mia bambina, a mia bel (Dear, my dear girl, to my lovely)
A mia cara, a mia cara, a mia bambina (To my dear, to my dear, to my girl)
A cara, cari a mi (My dear, dear to me)

*Bambina means "female child", so both "child" and "girl" can be used

I believe it is mostly in Italian, but I also read somewhere that they might be partly Latin, which would explain why it is so hard to determine the exact lyrics o0 Apparently the lyrics were partially improvised as well, with Ellen McLain(the voice actor of GLaDOS, the turrets and all of the Portal 1 cores except for Anger) making up the lyrics in her "bad high school Italian".

They obviously would make sure that the real message of the opera would be conveyed though, bad Italian or not, at least that's what I think XD Cause that's just what Valve does, putting messages behind everything ^^ Don't hold me to this, but I read somewhere that the Valve team are "deliberately holding the official lyrics back for us to interpret and figure out ourselves". So for now I'll be sticking with the deep interpretation I got out of those lyrics and leaving others to determine their own :3

ohh i see Oo
thanks!

and your drawing is great! =3
I hate it when people make GlaDOS and Chell lovers in FanFic stories or pictures /(
I like the 'friendly' relationship you gave between these two =3 Keeping it clean ;)

^^ Thank you so much!
And yeah, while I'm totally fine with other fans interpreting their bond like that, I'm not at all supporting them as actual lovers ^^; It's not even remotely close to the impression that I personally got from them, because I don't feel that's what the story is trying to tell us. Neither do I buy the "GLaDOS/Caroline is Chell's mother"-theory, but if there's one thing I DO believe, it's that in the end, after looking back and realizing just how much they'd been tied to each other in the past and how much they'd actually put each other through, GLaDOS became a sort of protective, motherLY figure for her, or at least a lethal-but-actually-very-close friend that would do all in her power to keep her safe.

I like to humour the theory that GLaDOS began to think of it like that during their time in Old Aperture and that she actually didn't want to let Chell go in the end, partly due to her possessive nature and partly because she'd have no means to protect her out there. But of course, after thinking about everything she'd forced Chell through(in both the 1st and 2nd game), she simply knew she couldn't keep her in Aperture because it'd be against her will and only serve to make her more miserable. She also started feeling bad for having affected the girl's fragile human life so horribly for such a long time, and so her only way to make amends and show her affection was to give Chell what she'd longed for ever since the beginning, her freedom ; ; GLaDOS's last gift to her. (Of course she wouldn't make her feelings obvious to her until they've parted in order to "keep up her reputation", so the opera pretty much says it all for her) What Chell thinks of all this is beyond me, so I just draw my conclusions from my own personal opinions XD Because in the end, it's the player's personal bond to the characters that count ^^

Omg.. I write too much sometimes XD That's what I get for replying at 4am. *Cough* Ahem. So anyways, the conclusion is that I think they have a pretty complicated, yet very strong bond after all that's happened <.< A powerful friendship. But not lovers. Not fully mother-and-daughter either. *Shrugs* This is deep stuff XD

tell me about, now i dont mind what people right... but for gosh sakes, making them lovers!? dear lord... Oo

But between the mother-to-daughter. I support that WAY more, plus i really like the idea of that.
I'm not sure if Caroline is chell's birth mother, but if she is. Then i'm not sure what that makes GlaDOS.
To tell ya the truth... i wish Chell would have stayed with her... <(
