Not a Moron by Arvata Not a Moron by Arvata
Quick re-doodling of an earlier drawing.

I never really thought of Wheatley as an actual moron. Neither did I blame him for what he did after taking over. Well yes, we obviously had to get him out of there, but I didn't hate him at all. The theory that GLaDOS' mainframe has some kind of instant-evilness-function doesn't really appeal to me, although the body did play a big part in it. Let's face it.. very few people could gain access to that much power and refrain from abusing it. And he was already suppressing a lot of emotions concerning his identity and origin, having endured constant mocking and injustice simply for being what he can't help... an Intelligence-Dampening Sphere created to provide clumsiness, stupidity and an endless flow of bad ideas. The misplaced anger he gained at the start of his takeover wasn't exactly helping his self-control either.

Wheatley is, despite his mildly contemptuous view on humans and the intention he had for befriending me(and I know he's kind of arrogant and selfish at times, I'm not at all saying he's perfect), a very nice, witty, patient, helpful and trusting friend. Yes, I was hurt and saddened by his actions, but .. I knew he was hurt too, see? I was never angry at him(GLaDOS pretty much made up for that during our journey back up, I agreed with her but didn't really feel any grudge myself). I didn't fight him for revenge, I simply wanted to knock some sense into him and make him realize what he was doing. We really were an awesome team before he became "corrupted", and I believe he's back to being "good ol' Wheatley" by now, if not even better. ^^ I admit though.. if I ever was to meet him again I WOULD be kind of wary towards him, at least for a while, but who wouldn't x.x Forgive, but not forget, right? ^^, He's still wonderful, though.

I know there's a hundred errors and flaws, but I don't care. And yes, I know it's a game. I just find it fascinating to take a look at the personality and situation of the characters we meet, so don't kill me, kayy?

Honestly I think GLaDOS was the REAL moron. She was blatantly insulting wheatley, telling him that I did all the work, she was practically asking for him to kill her! Yes, Wheatley probably shouldn't have projected his anger at her on me, but I still forgive him.
GLaDOS, on the other hand... I might have forgiven her too, but after how much she likes Cave Johnson, and that rant about revenge especially, and how she stupidly continues to insult Wheatley during chapter 8, I'm don't think i'm ready to do that.

I agree completely with everything you said about wheatley, and I honestly think that he wasn't really even designed to be a moron himself, but to give bad ideas, which dosen't necessarily imply stupidity. In fact, it might imply creativity and flexibility! This idea was reinforced in my mind by the various times in which Wheatley's seemingly random ideas actually helped!

When GLaDOS was saying that Chell was doing all of the work and that Wheatley was a moron full of bad ideas, I kinda agreed with her. But I was only thinking of the corrupted Wheatley who screwed up on his "tests" all the time and bit off more than he could chew. I didn't think of the Wheatley who saved Chell from GLaDOS on quite a few occasions, the one who came up with the plan to disarm GLaDOS by sabotaging Her most lethal weapons in the fist place and was able to guide Chell to wherever it was she needed to go. I didn't think of that Wheatley until after it was all over. In the end, he's not the only one apologizing... TAT

Aaaww >< Yeah... things got out of hand pretty fast as soon as he became in charge of the facility. So much confusion. When I heard his "uh-oh" as the crushed elevator started to fall, I genuinely believed he'd realized it'd gone a teeny bit too far and we'd be able to settle it peacefully as soon as we got back up again. Which didn't happen, of course. His abrupt indifference made me speechless(as if I wasn't already) and I felt really confused and hurt, especially as it got worse by the minute. The "Are you still alive!?" by the end was like a spear through my heart, haha ; ;

But yes. There are so many different sides to him, as well as GLaDOS. It's wonderful to know that they are such deep characters ^^ There really are a lot of great, memorable moments with them both.

Yeah, good point, but in my opinion, GLaDOS does just enough stupid/mean things after wheatley turns "evil" that I don't think I would forgive her. However, if given the chance, I would save wheatley from space, although I would of course be careful not to put him in charge of any facilities. =P

Agreed x.x The thing I find so special about this, though, is that GLaDOS never really cares about our forgiveness. She never excused her behaviour and teamed up with us only for the sake of the mutual deal we made(or so she makes it seem). She's not malevolent and sinister because of some malfunction or power-hungry rush, it is really part of how she is, which I think sort of makes a difference. Except for the cake promise in the first game, she is completely genuine in how she feels. Even at the very end, our conclusion of whether she really is on our side or not didn't matter, she had us in her clutches but shipped us out before we had time to make up our minds v.v

Whether it was pretended because he needed our assistance or that he really is nice despite his somewhat arrogant nature, Wheatley MADE us trust him. Even looked past his general dislike of humans and acted overly optimistic and caring to make us cooperate so we could get out alive. He deliverately built up a sort of "team spirit" and insisted on us relying on him. And then he turned on us, even though it would hurt him in no way to let us go as planned(before the Itch appeared). We may never have been given the cake GLaDOS offered, but she sure did not sugar-coat it the way he did, by playing with our feelings like that x.x And that is why the betrayal hurt so much, at least in my case. Because I really loved the trust and friendship that had been built up until this point.

I dunno where I'm going with this, really, as I'm a huge fan of both @@ But I would retrieve him too if I could. But more importantly I'd be stupid and try to get back into Aperture because I'm in love like that XD But yeah. She doesn't need our forgiveness because she enjoys being the mischievous villain that she is. Wheatley, however... man ; ; It's all so messy.

Did you notice, if you look up through the elevator hole as he smashes it down, he comes and glares at you and GLaDOS until the point his eye widens as he says "Uh-oh"? It made me super happy to realize he was probably still Wheatley, if only slightly, and that I could help him somehow. And I was upset when he said "Are you still alive!?" too. DX

Yeahh.. it was that tiny change in his "facial features" that made me believe we were still friends after all ; ; It was what kept me optimistic through everything as we tried to find our way back up, not the thoughts about Her plan to replace him again despite agreeing to it, but the knowledge that we might be able to confront him and settle the misunderstandings once and for all. I really had no idea what was going to happen from there, so I was simply hoping for the best.

...Wow, this is probably the first fanart of evil!Wheatley where I'd say he actually still looks cute.

I agree with a lot of what you said there, and while, as the player of the game, I still love Wheatley and totally forgive him and hope he comes back to Earth soon (that ending was the biggest gut-punch ever I swear)... I think if I were in Chell's shoes, I wouldn't be so quick to forgive him, if I did at all.

I know from experience that when a friend turns around and backstabs you like that, it hurts. And geez, Wheatley even tried to kill you, multiple times. (Even when you're both OUT IN SPACE. ...Though I'm still trying to figure out if he was yelling at you to let go because he was panicking or because he genuinely wanted you to fly off into space so he could pull himself back in.) Even if Chell did try to forgive him, how would they build their trust back? It's not a simple hug-and-it-gets-better situation. Though I wish it were. D:

...Buh, sorry for the ramble. Nice artwork, and kudos to you for drawing Wheatley's body. That's still something I have yet to attempt.

I understand what you're saying, but, I actually have sort of a complicated thing with Wheatley... I love his character and the role he played, until he was corrupted. I honestly can't help but feel that it was a betrayal that cannot be easily forgiven. It's a mirrored image of how Zeke betrayed Cole in inFAMOUS. Cole understood perfectly that, any man with the potential power Zeke had in his hands would have done the same; it's human nature. At the same time though, Cole thought Zeke was better than that. Cole trusted Zeke with millions of lives; including his own and Zeke betrayed that trust. Although Cole will still deal with Zeke because they were once the best of friends, Cole will never trust Zeke the way he did because of that very decision. I feel the same about Wheatley. He was my absolute favorite character, but now, I just can't forgive what he did... I really do understand what you're trying to get across, I just disagree, that's all. P.S. Great art, it's amazing :)
P.P.S I never thought he was a moron either :iconbigheartplz:

I totally get what you're saying x.x I believe that although he couldn't completely help what he did, and although I don't really blame him, I WOULD be hesitant to trust him again xX His betrayal really did hurt me, even though I doubt he'd be like that if it wasn't for the overwhelming emotions that goaded him into abusing the power x.x I can't forget the wonderful team we were, though ; ; I'm naive and easily-trusting like that. In his case, I'm like... Forgive, but not forget ^^
The scars will still be there, but maybe.. just maybe the mental ones can be overcome? ^^, *Hopeful*

Wheatley didn't have a real reason to become "evil." GLaDOS was initially pissed that she had been forced against her will into a computer, and decided to take her revenge on Aperture for that - but by then Cave was dead, and though we didn't know much about Caroline, she didn't seem the type to become as evil as she did. There are so many other factors that could have played a part. Wheatley, I don't think, really got to the level of "evil" that GLaDOS was; he didn't really know what he was doing, he already hated GLaDOS, and suddenly he, "tiny little Wheatley," had the power to do whatever he liked, and GLaDOS was reduced to a potato battery.

I agree about the misplaced anger to Chell. I think he really liked Chell, and was a great buddy, but having been the crappy underdog all his life and all at once is able to access full power -- it messed with his head. Any normal person under the circumstances would've done the same. No, he wasn't particularly smart about the facility shutting down, but again, he had no idea what he was doing. And once he was thrown into space, he realized right away how horrid he'd been. Wheatley was never really evil, I feel; more... confused, I'd say. Now, GLaDOS - she's evil. There's little redemption for her actions, despite her humanization toward the end.

Sorry for all that :XD: Your post just really made me happy X3

I agreeee totally with what you wrote... he was never "evil" despite his attempts at being so, it just became too much for him @@ GLaDOS always was and still is the real antagonist, being the only one that can fully control the immense power in her mainframe. Her sadistic, amoral, passive-aggressive nature makes her pretty much the most awesome enemy ever XDD

I did forge a REALLY strong bond with her during and at the end of the journey, though, despite knowing about all the horrible things she's done @@ I mean... yes, she's still the "villain", but.. as an exception of the "norm", I think the both of us ended up with a quite genuine affection for each other in the end, after being through so much during both games ^^, Notice how she let us leave without having to make up our mind about trusting or "forgiving" her at the very end(by sending us off too quickly for us to even react), a very strong action ^^, Disregard this if you want, but I personally believe she became a sort of bizarre, strong motherly figure for Chell, as.. I mean.. she's always been there for her(in a kind of twisted way though) and watched over her ever since she was captured. Not that she could possibly have felt that way for her(us) until they were forced to team up in the second game, and she had time to reflect on everything they'd been through(or rather what she made Chell go through), but I do think she was fond of her even from the start. Reflecting on that, I guess she really IS adopted ("and that's terrible.") o.0

...oh god, I guess the GLaDOS fangirl is out of the bag @@ Haha! I could write a book about all this, but mind you, these are just my PERSONAL opinions based on my own journeys, experiences and forged bonds in Aperture ^^, I'm not looking for a plot theory arguement discussion XDD *Raises hands in defense*

I realllly do agree with what you wrote @@ Soo many people believe he simply turns evil, but there's so much more to it than that >< All the characters we meet are quite complicated, really o0 And Wheatley... ; ; I never hated either of them. Through it all, I was just scared and hurt, wanting the three of us to "just get along already"!!! XD

And thank you. YOUR post really made me happy ^^ I love getting more insight into these characters @@

Haha I guess I forgot to make it clear that I adore GLaDOS :XD: I thought early on that Caroline might be Chell's mother but I've disregarded it for many reasons; despite that I do believe GLaDOS retained a bit of her humanness through all that, and in the end was better for it - and sometimes I like to think she didn't actually delete Caroline. I have a fanfic called "Answer Me" actually where Chell comes back an old woman and GLaDOS has missed her terribly. I completely fell in love with GLaDOS throughout the game -- but that doesn't make her any less evil. (I'm trying to do that now, realize that the villains I fangirl and freak out over are actually EVIL and whatnot XD.)

And thank you!! I'm glad I made you happy hahaa ^^; I love things like madness and corruption, cuz it's so complicated. :D

I've disregarded all the "Caroline-is-Chell's-mother" and "Caroline-partly-controls-GLaDOS-now-and-makes-her-nice"-theories long ago, not because it can't be true, but because although she might be an influence, I'm very positive that GLaDOS is acting all on her own. I also personally don't think they need that biological, genetic relationship at all for it to be this precious ^^ I'm also 100% sure that she didn't delete Caroline, that the whole "Caroline-deleted"-ramble was an act and a joke on her part when sending her off, as if to say "Don't you think I've gone soft!" and to retain her sadistic, villainous attitude XD She might've made an exception for Chell, but she's not about to become all gooey-gooey about it, people might think she'd lost her touch o0 So the indirect message from the turret opera was a very nice compromise, methinks ; ; <3<3<3 At least it made a huge impression on me.

(Which is why I'm doing that too now, for a long time actually, trying to wrap my mind around this crazy, intimidating, unpredictable, hilarious-but-malicious AI @@;; She's so scary and in many ways horrifying, but I've grown so fond and attached to her by now that I've lost all rational thoughts ^^;)

And I'm SO going to read your fanfic! ^^ It sounds really nice!!

And yesss XD GLaDOS is pretty much one big "It's complicated." She should totally get Facebook XD
