Not a Moron by Arvata Not a Moron by Arvata
Quick re-doodling of an earlier drawing.

I never really thought of Wheatley as an actual moron. Neither did I blame him for what he did after taking over. Well yes, we obviously had to get him out of there, but I didn't hate him at all. The theory that GLaDOS' mainframe has some kind of instant-evilness-function doesn't really appeal to me, although the body did play a big part in it. Let's face it.. very few people could gain access to that much power and refrain from abusing it. And he was already suppressing a lot of emotions concerning his identity and origin, having endured constant mocking and injustice simply for being what he can't help... an Intelligence-Dampening Sphere created to provide clumsiness, stupidity and an endless flow of bad ideas. The misplaced anger he gained at the start of his takeover wasn't exactly helping his self-control either.

Wheatley is, despite his mildly contemptuous view on humans and the intention he had for befriending me(and I know he's kind of arrogant and selfish at times, I'm not at all saying he's perfect), a very nice, witty, patient, helpful and trusting friend. Yes, I was hurt and saddened by his actions, but .. I knew he was hurt too, see? I was never angry at him(GLaDOS pretty much made up for that during our journey back up, I agreed with her but didn't really feel any grudge myself). I didn't fight him for revenge, I simply wanted to knock some sense into him and make him realize what he was doing. We really were an awesome team before he became "corrupted", and I believe he's back to being "good ol' Wheatley" by now, if not even better. ^^ I admit though.. if I ever was to meet him again I WOULD be kind of wary towards him, at least for a while, but who wouldn't x.x Forgive, but not forget, right? ^^, He's still wonderful, though.

I know there's a hundred errors and flaws, but I don't care. And yes, I know it's a game. I just find it fascinating to take a look at the personality and situation of the characters we meet, so don't kill me, kayy?

Honestly I think GLaDOS was the REAL moron. She was blatantly insulting wheatley, telling him that I did all the work, she was practically asking for him to kill her! Yes, Wheatley probably shouldn't have projected his anger at her on me, but I still forgive him.
GLaDOS, on the other hand... I might have forgiven her too, but after how much she likes Cave Johnson, and that rant about revenge especially, and how she stupidly continues to insult Wheatley during chapter 8, I'm don't think i'm ready to do that.

I agree completely with everything you said about wheatley, and I honestly think that he wasn't really even designed to be a moron himself, but to give bad ideas, which dosen't necessarily imply stupidity. In fact, it might imply creativity and flexibility! This idea was reinforced in my mind by the various times in which Wheatley's seemingly random ideas actually helped!

When GLaDOS was saying that Chell was doing all of the work and that Wheatley was a moron full of bad ideas, I kinda agreed with her. But I was only thinking of the corrupted Wheatley who screwed up on his "tests" all the time and bit off more than he could chew. I didn't think of the Wheatley who saved Chell from GLaDOS on quite a few occasions, the one who came up with the plan to disarm GLaDOS by sabotaging Her most lethal weapons in the fist place and was able to guide Chell to wherever it was she needed to go. I didn't think of that Wheatley until after it was all over. In the end, he's not the only one apologizing... TAT

Aaaww >< Yeah... things got out of hand pretty fast as soon as he became in charge of the facility. So much confusion. When I heard his "uh-oh" as the crushed elevator started to fall, I genuinely believed he'd realized it'd gone a teeny bit too far and we'd be able to settle it peacefully as soon as we got back up again. Which didn't happen, of course. His abrupt indifference made me speechless(as if I wasn't already) and I felt really confused and hurt, especially as it got worse by the minute. The "Are you still alive!?" by the end was like a spear through my heart, haha ; ;

But yes. There are so many different sides to him, as well as GLaDOS. It's wonderful to know that they are such deep characters ^^ There really are a lot of great, memorable moments with them both.

Yeah, good point, but in my opinion, GLaDOS does just enough stupid/mean things after wheatley turns "evil" that I don't think I would forgive her. However, if given the chance, I would save wheatley from space, although I would of course be careful not to put him in charge of any facilities. =P

Agreed x.x The thing I find so special about this, though, is that GLaDOS never really cares about our forgiveness. She never excused her behaviour and teamed up with us only for the sake of the mutual deal we made(or so she makes it seem). She's not malevolent and sinister because of some malfunction or power-hungry rush, it is really part of how she is, which I think sort of makes a difference. Except for the cake promise in the first game, she is completely genuine in how she feels. Even at the very end, our conclusion of whether she really is on our side or not didn't matter, she had us in her clutches but shipped us out before we had time to make up our minds v.v

Whether it was pretended because he needed our assistance or that he really is nice despite his somewhat arrogant nature, Wheatley MADE us trust him. Even looked past his general dislike of humans and acted overly optimistic and caring to make us cooperate so we could get out alive. He deliverately built up a sort of "team spirit" and insisted on us relying on him. And then he turned on us, even though it would hurt him in no way to let us go as planned(before the Itch appeared). We may never have been given the cake GLaDOS offered, but she sure did not sugar-coat it the way he did, by playing with our feelings like that x.x And that is why the betrayal hurt so much, at least in my case. Because I really loved the trust and friendship that had been built up until this point.

I dunno where I'm going with this, really, as I'm a huge fan of both @@ But I would retrieve him too if I could. But more importantly I'd be stupid and try to get back into Aperture because I'm in love like that XD But yeah. She doesn't need our forgiveness because she enjoys being the mischievous villain that she is. Wheatley, however... man ; ; It's all so messy.

Did you notice, if you look up through the elevator hole as he smashes it down, he comes and glares at you and GLaDOS until the point his eye widens as he says "Uh-oh"? It made me super happy to realize he was probably still Wheatley, if only slightly, and that I could help him somehow. And I was upset when he said "Are you still alive!?" too. DX

Yeahh.. it was that tiny change in his "facial features" that made me believe we were still friends after all ; ; It was what kept me optimistic through everything as we tried to find our way back up, not the thoughts about Her plan to replace him again despite agreeing to it, but the knowledge that we might be able to confront him and settle the misunderstandings once and for all. I really had no idea what was going to happen from there, so I was simply hoping for the best.
